Pancakes, Eggs Benedict and Horses at Riders Cafe

I first heard about this place on the internet and later saw actual pictures when blogger 365days2play did a great post on the scones she had for tea here.

As we were driving here and heading closer, it suddenly struck us that we have been here many times before. It was just that this used to be a driving range, where we used to hang out ten years ago, a place where you could hit a basket of balls for S$10 dollars.  This is a nice transformation and I prefer a Cafe over a driving range any day. I am not that fond of golf anyway. It was a real nice to see a bit of nature and the elegantly trotting horses.  It was quite exciting to see them walk by and that is how deprived of nature I am.

This majestic white horse looked really sad. It made me wonder – do all horses have melancholic faces or does this horse not have enough room to run about?

There were interesting signs telling cars to watch out for the horses and not to feed the monkeys that added to the rustic feel of this place.  Anything far from urban never fails to appease my heart.  I think I was meant to be born in a place surrounded by trees and not buildings.  I always feel much lighter and happier when I see elements of nature and sometimes looking at too many shopping malls, just stresses me out.

When I saw this stunning bare tree I just had to take a photo. If you were blindfolded and brought here, you would think you were somewhere else and not Singapore. This tree reminds me of the bare temperate trees found in a winter landscape. The only two things that would give it away would be the green grass and sweltering humidity. Luckily it was a relatively overcast day and not as hot as it usually is, just before noon.

We did not have a reservation, but the lady at the door was so nice and took down our mobile number to contact us later once a table was ready. It was a nice place to roam around anyway and our table was ready in a short ten minutes. I just have to commend them for not being snooty like other places such as PS Cafe where they think it’s cool to hire people to look down on you to give the place an exclusive vibe, like an expensive designer boutique. That’s just not our style and I’m glad this place is so not that either.

We had a table at the veranda which was a bit hot so we later requested for a table inside, and they were really nice to allow us to move. The odd thing was, the ladies powder room downstairs was air-conditioned and even had shower facilities. So if you need to cool off for a bit, head to the loo!

Even from the outside, the place looks beautiful.  It is filled with an abundance of greenery and was very well landscaped with striking red palms and other tropical varieties I couldn’t identify.

A short stairway leads to the entrance of the Cafe which had a high ceilings with severals fans on full blast. I would have preferred if it was air-conditioned as I tend to radiate heat and feel very uncomfortable when it is too hot, and that was the only downer about the place. My partner cannot take the heat either and I think maybe we were both meant for a cooler climate.

We were here for brunch, and he had the Eggs Benedict while I went for the pancakes. They were both scrumptious as the pictures will show. They tasted as good as they looked and the huge jar of ice water provided was a great touch. I don’t like it when some places force you to order drinks by not providing water.

Just look at that divine egg yolk!

The powdered icing sugar was a lovely touch and you can tell that the people who run the place have passion.

The pancakes were so yummy that they was soon all gone. I found the berries a bit too sourish and I wish they could have provided whipped butter as well. I like my pancakes decadent with loads of butter.

Here’s the Menu for when we decide to make a return visit.  I just noticed they have bloody hot buffalo wingers on their menu and that intrigues the chilli queen in me. Click on it for a larger view.

The table at the veranda was a bit too hot as you get the direct sun beams here. If you love the sun you might love it.

I will definitely return and the next time I will make a reservation for the inner table. The Eggs Benedict was $12 while the Pancakes were $10 with the total bill at $25.90 Singapore dollars. Perhaps it would be good to come for tea or dinner when the air gets cooler.

The great thing is, this is a place you can dress down.

I love the Bukit Timah area in the West of Singapore because it is so green and quiet. It is truly a residential district. I couldn’t resist snapping the lush foliage on the winding road out. I definitely hope to return to this place on another overcast day.
