Appam Specialist at Tekka Market

Appam is a Ceylonese breakfast item that I used to have every Sunday as a child. In English it is called Hoppers.  My uncle used to go to the market to buy them for us and those were so yummy. It’s best when it’s fresh from the griddle. These are a bit like sour milk pancakes as they are made using fermented rice flour and milk. In Sri Lanka there is a version called Paal Appam (Paal means milk in Tamil) which is actually made with coconut milk added to the doughy centre, but I prefer the plain ones found in Singapore. The middle fluffy and sticky middle is so divine, but some people prefer the crispy edges.

Anyway I was disappointed that this stall in Tekka Market (Little India) didn’t make the appams fresh when you place the order. They gave me ones that were already made and left sitting there so if wasn’t too good.  Cold appum is about as good as cold pancakes.  You can choose to have this dish with egg stew or orange sugar. I always stick with the orange sugar.

It’s probably not comparable to what you have in the US but I do like Margaritas at Dempsey Village (11 Dempsey Road) and it’s also at Siglap. When I was a kid I used to have meals at a place called Cha Cha Cha’s at Holland Village but it might not be there anymore. When all fails I go to Chillis at Tanglin Mall if I am craving for Nachos and Quesiladas. I have a feeling our meals here are not super authentic…hope you go try and let us know 🙂

Update: I just checked. Cha Cha Cha’s is still around but I read some comments that the service is bad. I remember that it was around in the mid 80s and the service and food was great then, but then again what does a kid know. Everything new and exotic was probably great to me then.

I think you would need to visit the owners at Tekka to see if they are willing to do this? I saw another place selling appam – at Changi Airport Terminal 3 Kopi Tiam as well.

      Wishing you luck
Thanks for dropping by my simple blog Zalikha
