While wandering around Chinatown with the tourists, we came across this hotchpotch display of lanterns and later discovered they were from all over the world. If you wanna have a look, it’s just outside the Chinatown MRT (subway) station). We were taken with all the riot of colours of the lanterns against the restored shophouses.
I have always associated lanterns with Chinese culture and have never given a thought about how it also features in other cultures – probably influenced in ancient times by China. These had a function before we had electricity and served as portable lighting devices, but these days they are mainly decorative and made of paper, cloth and plastic.
Oh so Pretty, It’s amazing how something so simple can look so wonderful and have so much meaning.
thanks so much Meg 🙂
I love the lantern displays! They are beautiful!
I guess I am so used to a lot of things I see in Singapore because they are so familiar to me. Sometimes I crave for the exotic…which is anything non Asian.
