Candylicious (Resorts World Sentosa)

This store attracts you from afar with its Candy trees. The closer you get you see girls posing with the Jelly Beans, M&Ms and Reese’s buttercup men.  I adored the words on the posters and even the sign that said no photography. Look at the photo below and you’ll see why.  Anyway I abided by their rule and didn’t take a single photo indoors, but you should definitely go check out the store.  It is pretty amazing. Feels like you’re inside Willa Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, but the mostly candy version.  There are rows of jellybean canisters stacked high on the wall and M&Ms of all kinds of colours.  There were these little satin cupcake shaped boxes for trinkets, that young girls would love.  Well, even old girls like me did.  There was even pop rock – the candy that fizzes and crackles in your mouth. You’ll need at least an hour to look at every type of candy at this store.

Check out the Candylicious Website which is really cute too. The flagship store was launched in Dubai last year. In Singapore the store is just across Universal Studios. According to the website they have over 5000 kinds of candy. The director behind this store is Sunaina Gill, a Dubai based Singaporean. She heads Retail is Detail, a family business based in Dubai which is also behind the store ‘I Wanna Go Home’. And yes she’s gorgeous and skinny. Her father J S Gill is the founder of Royal Sporting House which he has sold off. Her younger brother Sanveer is in the business too.

The latest player to try for a slice of the pie is Candylicious, operated by new player Gill Capital.

The 9,000-sq ft shop at Resorts World Sentosa is the newest and largest candy store in town. The outlet, which cost $1.8 million to set up, is the latest addition to the growing candy market here.

Gill Capital also opened two Hershey’s Chocolate World outlets earlier this year, at the resort in April and at Tampines Mall this month.

The group, headed by siblings Sanveer, 26, and Sunaina Gill, 29, children of JS Gill, founder of Royal Sporting House, will be looking to open four to five more Candylicious stores here in the next two to three years.

“We are selling a recession-proof product,” Gill gives the reason for the move to invest and expand in the region in times of moderate consumer spending activity. “Candies are a feel-good item,” Gill says.
“They are always in demand. Besides that, the price level of the products is “very competitive,” she adds.

When I was there after it opened, I noticed their reeses were slightly more pricey than the ones at the Hershey store across the way. I’ll have to check and see if that’s still true.
