Vintage TV: Elizabeth Montgomery made Bewitched, Magic

This is one show equally loved by both my mum and myself.  It’s Bewitched. I mostly watched the re-runs, but recall bits of it from childhood as well, especially the seasons when little Tabitha (played by a very cute Erin Murphy) was featured. They really looked like real life mother and daughter – amazing casting. Watching the clips now, you realize that there are some terribly sexiest elements, but just enjoy it for what it is.  What I would do if I was a writer on that show. For one – why suppress such wonderfully magical skills? Imagine cleaning a house with just a twitch of your nose – now that’s impressive.

There are some amazing Bewitched tributes on YouTube and take a trip down memory lane with these.  They take really long to load, but they are worth it.  It’s no wonder the modern movie version with Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell flopped. There’s just no capturing the magic and charisma of the beautiful Elizabeth Montgomery.  No one could twitch their nose like she did. I also love gazing at all her chic outfits and the now vintage furnishings.

I also was sad when Dick York was replaced in the 5th season of Bewitched.  It just didn’t work. He seemed too harsh and not as lovable and goofy as Dick York who couldn’t play Darrin anymore due to severe back problems.

Sadly actress Elizabeth Montgomery died at just 62 of colon cancer only two months after her diagnosis.

On another note, does anyone else think that Ellen Pompeo of Grey’s Anatomy looks a little bit like Elizabeth Montgomery when she’s in vintage attire, like in this photo shoot for Allure Magazine?

Well I did just say, a little. Here’s the original bombshell.

  1. Hello girly girl. Just checking in to say hello. What I’m noticing on your blog the most lately is how everyone is in shorts. It’s FREEZING over here and I’m sitting next to a warm fire. Whenever I sit here I feel like I just can’t get up.

Funny you should blog about Bewitched today as while I was ordering my lunch, a falafel, it was on overhead and I haven’t seen it for years.

    Hope all is well.

    Julie

I love love love the cold…can we switch places? 😉 How nice if we could do it with just a nose twitch!

It’s cool how much some shows are loved the world over 🙂

I recall watching the reruns more than a decade ago. Is it on again? Love the show, and also some other old ones like green gables, I love Lucy and gomer Pyle.

My mum and I both love Bewitched too! She’s the one who introduced it to me and I totally fell in love with it, I watched it like everyday when I was a kid.
Now, Nicole Kidman is my favorite Hollywood actress – I’ll name my first child after her – but she will never be a better Samantha then Elizabeth.

I thought there would be a whole generation missing out of these amazing classic shows….so wholesome and wonderful 🙂

I’ve always loved the name Nicole. I think Nicole Kidman was best in Moulin Rouge and The Hours. Her sister Antonia is now in Singapore! A friend of mine spotted her at a mall, but I haven’t bumped into her yet.

  4. I used to watch Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie all the time!! Absolutely loved them, and yes I wanted to be the witch/genie too…

  5. I found this funny BBC comedy Miranda on line and got a big laugh out of it. I think you will like her. She’s a single woman in her 30s and her mom wants her to get married. Her comedic talent is up there with Lucille Ball, just perfect timing.

    Hope you enjoy.

Just watched 2 minutes and I love her so much (& her wonderful British accent)…..she reminds me of ‘Bridget Jones’. Thanks for the introduction! Will be waiting for the whole thing to load now so I can watch it at one go 🙂
