My Sister Loves Shibly Prata

This is my sister’s top pick for prata at Casuarina Road which is somewhere in the Thomson area. I like coming here too. We used to frequent Shibly in our early twenties, so it has a bit of nostalgia tied to it.

The only thing is, you have to be patient and wait for a parking spot. Also once I saw a bunch of wild monkeys ‘attacking a car’. There were from the Lower Pierce Reservoir which is just a beside this residential estate. I was a bit scared of a big monkey, sitting on the roof of the car. I have seen wild monkeys attack and snatch stuff from people at Batu Caves in Malaysia and have been a bit wary since. But it’s the people’s fault for feeding them, and making them dependent in spite of all the notices around.

My sister doesn’t drink coffee or tea as it gives her a headache, but she loves the rose lime drink. I tried it and it tasted as lovely as it looks. We used to drink quite a lot of rose syrup at my grandma’s house as kids. This version has lime juice in it. It makes me wonder if Rose Syrup is a very Singaporean thing. It’s easy to make. Just get the F&N Rose Cordial from the supermarket and add chilled water and ice. Add fresh milk and it becomes Bandung (a lovely shade of pink drink) and add lime juice and it becomes Rose Limau.

I chose to have the Teh Alia (Ginger Tea with Milk) instead which was better than most places, but somehow can’t beat what I’ve had at Samy’s Curry or at Tekka Market.

My sister loved the mee goreng (fried noodles). She got a mix of beehoon and noodles but it was a bit too spicy for her. I found it very tasty and just right in terms of spice.

The prata here is really good, but I’ve had better curry at the Old KTM Railway at Keppel. At Keppel you can fish curry, dhall and thalcha, but here I think it was chicken curry. It didn’t have the assam (sourish) taste I like. Anyway it didn’t quite matter so much as I had one prata with egg and onions which goes with the curry and another one with egg cheese that goes with a sprinkle of sugar. I ordered too much and over indulged as usual.

There was a cat with beautiful green eyes watching as I ate and parked herself right beside me. I couldn’t capture her pretty eyes as she was shy and kept looking down each time I clicked. I am not that comfortable with animals as I never had a pet growing up, but I wish that I was. Whenever I see how good my cousins are with their pets, I wish I didn’t have that fear in me. But at least I am not so bad. I had a friend who would jump a mile high if a cat was so much as a metre away. I can understand her phobia though.

I wonder why everyone seems to frequent the air-conditioned Casuarina Prata shop that occupies 2 units down the road. I tried it once and wasn’t impressed. I also don’t think prata should be eaten in an air-conditioned place. It just seems wrong. For one, it would cool down fast and the air-conditioning would be permeated with the smell of curry. Not very pleasant. The service at Shibly is way better too.

It was a cool cloudy night and very nice at the relatively empty Shibly Prata.

The place is called Shibly Muslim Food and Restaurant, although we call it Shibly Prata for short. It’s at 132 Casuarina Road.

  1. Casuarina is indeed overrated…..Shall try Shilby next time I’m back!

hope it’s really good for you as well. This place wasn’t very packed but I guess the people who come here are die hard fans from over the years. My personal fave is the one at the old railway. I wonder what will become of the stall once the KTM railway at keppel closes.

Isn’t it called Shibly? I Used to eat there quite a lot because I lived down the road! And I agree that they have better prata 🙂

I think in my mind I changed it to Shilby (maybe easier to pronounce) and my sister didn’t correct me…..thanks for pointing that out…I’ve changed it now 🙂

      The Thomson area is cool.

I enjoyed a fantastic prata at Shibly on a visit to Singapore from the UK in May. I’m currently designing a poster to show my appreciation for the place. I was wondering if you’d mind me including the line “My sister loves Shibly Prata” on there?
