10 Reasons Why I Read Your Blog

I was thinking about blog traffic and what it is that draws readers to blogs. Then I started looking inward. What draws me to other people’s blogs? What is it that keeps me coming back? I think I am mostly drawn to personal blogs, especially by women. Somehow age does not matter. If you have engaged me, it doesn’t matter if you’re 20 or 80. Unlike what the blogging experts say, I think you don’t need to have a niche, because I am drawn to you and your stories.

These are 10 reasons that came to mind immediately:

1. I am drawn to your brave and candid posts where you let all your raw emotions hang out. It makes me feel that I am not alone and your vulnerability draws me in hook, line and sinker.

2. It’s fascinating when you blog with high quality pictures of your life – your stunning, strange and intimate images.

3. When your writing style is clean and crisp – it’s just a total delight to read and I start wishing I could write like you.

4. When I find that you’re always teaching me something that improves my life.

5. Sharing your uniquely fresh perspective and making me look at life in a way I have never done before.

6. When you constantly inspire me and help me squash that negative voice in my head. When you make me feel fired up and like anything is possible.

7. When you write every day, as I am already addicted to daily shots of you and feel forlorn when there is no new post or worse – when you no longer post.

8. When your blog is uncluttered, gorgeous and the font is clear and kind to my eyes.

9. You bring me the latest breaking news that’s super interesting.

10. You blog about some new place or food in Singapore that I am aching to try out or explore now. And I love it when you’re a self engaged secret shopper or diner and I know your post is unbiased.

Thank you so much for leaving me with such sweet comments!!!! Your post is very helpful. Isn’t it so true that looking inward and see what you are drawn to really guides you to see what needs to be done. If I make a list like yours, I think I will have many of yours in mine as well. I was nodding when I was reading! I am constantly drawn to blogs with beautiful images, too. It is true that some bloggers are very good about engaging reader to their content. There are as many blogs as the number of stars out there and everyday there are new blogs that are born. I feel intimidated sometimes, but I guess I have keep making efforts and do my best. 🙂 Do you still live in Singapore? Singapore is a fascinating country!

Kaho I am so thrilled that you dropped by. I just stumbled upon your blog and immediately fell in love with it. Your writing style and your photography. The information you provide about travel is better than anything I could find in a guidebook and that’s what I really love about reading travel guides on blogs rather than from a guide. It also helps that you have super cute models 🙂

Yes I live in Singapore and often feel the grass is greener, but blogging helps me look at my tiny hot island with new excitement.

Thanks for such a sweet compliment. I’m thrilled to have you as my reader! I myself look for blogs on google search when I travel because bloggers seem to put honest reviews which are very helpful and they are more personal. Singapore is a cool little island!!! You’re lucky to live there!

I only read 1 guide before coming here – your Vietnam travel reviews with your gorgeous photos and useful shopping guide. I didn’t need to buy a single travel guide books all because of your blog Kaho. Thanks for making me even more excited to come. Am gonna go enjoy more of the city now.

You have one big fan of Chuzai Living here in Singapore 🙂

  2. Crystal says:

    I love your blog because…

    1-The gorgeous photography.

2-The insider’s viewpoint (as an expat here in SG, you often show or explain things such that I understand them better, or see the deeper meaning behind the X)

3-The relationship you build with your readers

4-That you constantly get me excited about living here and encourage me to explore even more.

5-Your lovely writing style (although I wish you wrote more about your life).

Crystal you are so sweet….thank you! 🙂 It really does encourage me to carry on. My partner asked me to do # 5 too – he told me he enjoys my angsty posts more.

I have learned a lot from you too. About what it is like to be an expat in Singapore. I never thought about how difficult the whole adjustment process can be and I think you are coping wonderfully – I have never lived abroad and the whole idea is quite daunting, although it sounds like quite an adventure too.

You give me a front seat view to a Singapore expatriate’s life. And you go beyond that too and I sincerely enjoy reading your life stories.

    Awesome. I’m tweeting this!

    • bookjunkie says:

      Gosh…thank you Maria 🙂

Your story about the tea lady is still strongly etched in my mind…just brilliant 🙂 There are so many subtle things I don’t notice till an expat blogger like yourself writes about it and opens up the world a little more for me.

  4. Yes! Ditto!! This is very helpful to anyone wanting to write a great blog, and I’m sure I’m not the only one to value your opinion.

  5. jannatwrites says:

I like your post because I’ve been curious about what makes people return (or not) to a blog. I wouldn’t pose this question to my readers though, because it could make them realize they don’t know and then they wouldn’t come back 🙂

I know you don’t speak for all readers, but it’s nice to know some of the elements that you look for.

  6. jazziefizzle says:

Fabulous post! It is so nice to get an insight on what makes someone like one blog over all the other blogs that exist.

You always leave such sweet comments, so I want to take this chance to say thank you as I sometimes get preoccupied with other things in life and take forever to respond. 🙂

I was wondering about it too and that’s why I decided to look at what makes me love all the blogs that I subscribe to. I like blogs a whole lot better than regular ‘professional’ websites, because they are by ordinary people who are in fact extraordinary in my eyes. Blogs that I enjoy just seem so real and I feel a connection to the blogger/ writer. That’s why when Brisbane flooded I immediately thought about you Jazzie. Thanks for sharing Brisbane with me. Your Brisbane 🙂 And Australia too. Your gorgeous photos (or should I say by your other half…Kris)…..Makes me long for a vacation in Australia.

  7. Hey BJ,

This post is so inspiring to me. It’s a nice way to look at things from the reader’s point of view instead of the writers. It made me think. I agree with you on many aspects, mostly when blog writers are willing to be vulnerable and share some of their lives with their readers. It isn’t always easy to be so public that anyone with a click can read right into what you are thinking but I think that the challenge makes us better people.

    At least I hope so.

I also agreed with your nice fonts easy on the eyes bit. It’s so true. I think my font is too small but I haven’t managed to work around that one yet.

    Thanks again.

    Julie

I need to work on being kinder to the reader myself…sometimes I just post in a hurry and am quite self indulgent…I never check spelling or grammar…I know it’s terrible. I also post too many pictures that make it hard to load. All this feedback I get from my partner.. but it’s constructive criticism so I hope I’ll improve with time.

Thanks for being inspirational on your blog and always interacting with me through comments…it makes me feel connnected to you 🙂 it’s cool to have an American friend in Italy! makes me realize how unique all our lives are and we each have something of value to share about our life experiences.
