I only like reading reviews after I have read a book. Decided to do 3 word reviews of the books I’ve read instead. No chance of spoilers that way.
I really need to pick it up as I’ve only read 5 books in 3 months. Although I did enjoy taking particularly long with Remains of the Day, savouring it slowly. The library does give you 3 whole weeks to read a book.
Anyhoo, I would recommend these 5 very strongly. All of them are novels – fiction. I noticed that I have been gravitating towards fiction although last year I did read the Happiness Project by Gretchin Rubin. The characters by these award winning authors have been lovingly portrayed and they remain in my memory long after.
1. Kazuo Ishiguro: Never Let Me Go (haunting, disturbing, fragility)
2. Kazuo Ishiguro: Remains of the Day (dignity, waste, loyalty)
3. Rohinton Mistry: A Fine Balance (poverty, nostalgia, love)
4. Peter Mayle: Anything Considered (frothy, gourmet, fun)
5. Kurt Vonnegut: Mother Night (shocking, morality, war)
have you seen the movie for The Remains of the Day? would you recommend the book?
Oh yes…it was beautiful. I feel that you can’t watch the movie without first reading the book…so many details are left out. The movie experience is enhanced when you’ve read the book. Hope you get a chance to Angie 🙂
Hi, I found your comment on the Worpdress.com “guided transfer” thread and was wondering if you were still thinking about transferring your blog over to self-hosting. If you are, I highly recommend it. You have more flexibility, you can start advertising, it’s more fun, etc.
If you aren’t sure which hosting solution to use, Host Gator is really good (it also has the best prices). You can get 25% off by using this coupon code: gatorhosting25off. As far as the transfer goes, if you give them your login information, one of their technical representatives will do the transfer for you. That’s the easiest way that I’ve found to transfer a blog from WordPress.com to self-hosting.
If you have any other questions, I’d be happy to answer them. You can use the e-mail included with this comment if you’d like.
Good luck for everything.
I wish all reviews were like this! Very easy to decide to read or not.
Aww thanks Savvy Sister….I find it hard to plod through too verbose reviews myself and don’t like spoilers. I’d rather just read a book based on whether I am drawn in by the first paragraph and a bit of the blurb.
Kazuo Ishiguro is an amazing writer 🙂 I got one question though for you: Who are your favourite authors?
Love that question: Yann Martel, Haruki Murakami (Kafka on the Shore, The Wind-up Bird Chronicle), Kazuo Ishiguro, Rohinton Mistry, Paul Theroux (the travel books), Kiran Desai, Salman Rushdie (especially the non-fiction), Kurt Vonnegut, Bill Bryson, V S Naipaul (A House Mr Biswas), Peter Mayle (especially French Lessons and the travel ones), Sylvia Plath (the Bell Jar), …..just off the top of my head 🙂
