I like walking through the old shopping centre at Holland Village and the base of which is Cold Storage which seems to have been here forever. I recall coming here when I was in Junior College, a lifetime ago.
I find the classic blue and white porcelain ware so beautiful. My aunt has two tall pots with bamboo in them. Cobalt blue against white is just exquisite.
There are many clothing and home decor stores on the first level. The children’s dresses here are very cute. And I love the peasant blouses.
This store sells plus size clothing.
There was a DVD store too. I was attracted by Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo. His unique take on the little Mermaid. His animation work takes my breath away and Spirited Away made me tear. Never thought a cartoon could do that to me.
Loads of Asian art to appeal to the expat. Although the secret is you can probably get it a lot cheaper at Serangoon Road. Maybe not of the same quality though, but you might be able to if you look hard enough through the little alley ways. I haven’t done that myself for a long long time.
Wonder why there was a poster with a warning about this guy, at the bookstore.
One of the few remaining second hand book stores that had books I like including those by Vonnegut and not just the usual fluffy romances. Sorry, I have a low tolerance for the fluffy stuff although I recall that as a kid my sister used to always try to sneak in some Mills and Boons when my dad took us to the bookstore. For me, I tried sneaking in Archie or Beano comics.
I was very attracted by all the ribbons at this craft store.
More Asian craft stores.
Thought this dress was pretty. Looked a bit vintage too.
The yoghurt store with the ranchy signs
As we were leaving, it was getting so hot. That’s when the sky is the loveliest blue.
Quite difficult to get a parking space here and the car was baked when we returned.
Pity the Starbucks here is always crowded. Wish one of those little boutique cafes would set up shop here.
Haha! These yogurt signs are hysterical.
BJ, I love these ribbon photos!
Wish I was more talented when it comes to things like craft. I am sure some crafty person out there can think of what to do with these ribbons.
EMF Bookstore! I haven’t seen one in ages… years perhaps! It used to be my favourite bookstore as I love borrowing (despite the fact that we must pay) books as they were cheaper than buying. and easier to find as compared to library books.
At least we used to get some money back when we returned them. But sometimes we loved the books so much we ended up keeping them.
Even though I’ve been to Holland Village umpteen times, I still find your photos interesting! You have a good eye. I especially like the ribbons shots.
Thank you….I got quite lucky with my random shots 🙂
Pardon me if I’ve asked before, but have you tried using the site Goodreads? I mainly use it to organize and keep track of books I’ve read. But it’s also good at recommending books and letting me see what my friends are reading. It has inspired me to read more this year because I can see my friends are also reading. Not out of competitive spirit, but more like a reminder that if they can make time, so should I. There is also a neat feature where you can recommend books to others or vice versa. Thought I would just share =)
Lovely post! The bookstore was what reminded me of goodreads.
I have seen good reads, but never really check it out properly…must do that soon 🙂
Have you seen Miyazaki’s “Tombstone of the Fireflies”? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tombstone_of_Fireflies)
