#82. Singapore Sunsets

The sunsets in Singapore seem to happen in the blink of an eye. The sky goes from blue tinged with yellow, to blue tinged with pink and then it’s all just a deep blue. You’ll miss it if you don’t look out for it. Nature’s wonder happens at around 7 pm. By 7.30 it’s dark. I think it’s part of being located at the equator. I wonder what sunsets away from the equator are like? If you live nearer to the poles, could you tell me in the comments what it’s like where you live? To me our pale blue skies tinged with pink is one of the most beautiful sights. I love nature, because there is something spiritual about it. It’s just calming.

According to this cool sun rise sun set online calculator, Singapore’s sunsets last about 12 minutes and happen at 7.10 pm.

When I lived in New Zealand there would be the period called twilight, especially in summer, where it would just take a really long time to get dark. And for photographers and filmmakers, the 45 minutes – 1 hour before sunrise or sunset is called the “magic hour” because of the lighting. In NZ it was a lot easier to catch the “magic hour” – it’s a lot shorter here!

Longer. The windows in our NYC apartment faced west and we’d enjoy a long sunset and a glass of wine most summer nights. Here, we often do admire the sunsets, but by the time I’ve taken out my camera, snapped on the right lens, etc., the sun has already dipped below the horizon :(. (Admittedly, the one thing I miss very much about our summer is the long days. Every day is the same length here and I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to that.)

Like Kirsten and Notabilia said, sunsets in Boston last a lot longer. About an hour, I guess. The length of day varies quite a bit, too, with winter sunsets around 4:30/5pm and summer sunsets as late as 9/9:30 (4th of July fireworks are often never before 10pm because it’s just not dark enough!).

I actually like the predictability of the sunshine hours here. I find that the super short days in winter (dark when you go to work, dark when you leave) leave you morose and exahusted all the time (there’s a term “seasonal affective disorder” or SAD, that affects a number of people in that part of the world for this very reason). While the long days are fun as a kid (I didn’t have to go to bed before it was dark in the summer, which was huge) it was rough right at the end of the school year, and at the start when I’d have to go to bed and it would still be light out. With the 12 and 12, it seems nicely balanced to me. It’s definitely something I’ll miss when I go home.

I have never experienced SAD before. But I think part of the frustration of working long hours here (leaving the house before sunrise and coming home past 9pm) is that we hardly get to experience the sunshine especially if we have to work through lunch hour. I didn’t realise how important lunch hour was till now. No wonder that short 1 hour break makes you feel so happy. This is so off topic, but I tended to have heavy lunches and dreaded meetings in dark rooms after – there was no way I could stay awake! That awful nodding off……highly embarrassing.

I guess I like to experience new things like seasons – crave it. Seems so exciting – the change.

We’re starting to have longer days. The sun sets about 9ish – close to 10pm here in Geneva. I love the long days for it just seems like more things get done. Thanks for sharing this, lemme try and do a sunset post here to show you a different perspective if you like. 🙂

I love looking up at the skies whether its shot straight through with the sun or softly speckled with clouds- and yes, i agree the light changes really fast– it goes from bright to orange, pink, a streaky blue, then inky blue all in a single mrt ride 🙂

Nice photos! The sunset looks really pretty! We have a long sunset in Jakarta, but I feel like since we’re surrounded by tall buildings, we don’t get to see it well. I’m in Singapore by the way! I came here for the medical reason for my daughter. Trying to find a good restaurant to go, so I came to you. 🙂
