Getting Excited Over My WordPress Stats

Even though I try not to be obsessive about it, I just can’t help it.  I love checking my stats.  It gives me a sense of satisfaction, especially on days when I wonder “What the heck am I doing with my life?”  Well it doesn’t quite answer that question, but at least in a strange way I feel like my life is not completely devoid of meaningful activity.

When my stats improve, I must confess it’s a total ego booster, but when they go down I get a bit worried that my blog must be started to suck.

Some days, quite often, I bore myself. That’s when I realize I have to put more work into this and shake things up.  I am a perfectionist, but my blog is one of the least perfect things I have done.  I just let it all hang out and post when I want to and about whatever I want to – minus any major editing.  It’s totally like writing in a journal.

The most fun thing is reading your comments and older posts.  When I don’t know what to eat, I look at my old food posts and then it dawns on me why it’s impossible to lose any weight even though in my head I feel like I am ‘dieting’.

So here are my stats:

Total visits as of right now (almost 15 months): 413, 962 (I am itching to reach half a million hits – because my OCD self likes round numbers)

Total posts: 1,615 (which means I wrote at least 3 posts a day)

Subscribers: 59

I started this blog on the 16th of April 2010, but it was kept private till about May.  My visitors doubled after half a year and then remained stagnant.  It then doubled again towards the end of 2010 and had remained  about constant till then.  I have about 1000 – 1300 visits at least a day and that makes me so happy. One big factor is that I post a lot and about a variety of topics besides Singapore. Wish there was some way I could translate it into dollars though, but I have no idea whether any company would want to advertise on this blog.  Anyway even if they wanted to, I couldn’t do it unless I migrate the content to a domain I own like my Singapore Actually blog, which I started a year later than this one.  It would be sweet though, and would at least justify the time I spend here and take away the guilt factor.

I am so emotionally invested in this blog because it is my online diary and I love the interactions I have with other bloggers whom I feel connected with. Once I read your blogs I get hooked, and enjoy following your lives.  It’s a bit like reality TV but better because it’s unscripted, which explains why I am so addicted to vlogs on YouTube like the Shaytards.

The blog has grown on me so much that I just don’t want to change the name or even the look. I like being in the WordPress family, even though it means I can’t make a cent out of this in terms of ads, unless I decide to set up a kind of store and sell stuff. But the upside is, it’s free and hazzle free too. Also I learned that readers get annoyed and disoriented when the design of the blog keeps changing, so I’m sticking with my Twenty Ten Theme with it’s nice clear font size and clean layout.

thank you…..it’s cos I post quite a bit I think 🙂 I must work on my quality though…my posts have loads of typos.

I too am glad to have the company of a fellow stats addict 😉

  2. Your stats are quite impressive! I have 87 posts and I am preparing for only 100 and you have 1615!!
This surely validates the fact that you are talented!

Thanks dear, but if I had a full time job like you I would probably just post just once or twice a month. Decided to do it before something else takes over my life and I can’t do it at this rate anymore. Thanks also for all the encouragement.

  3. Hi I tripped over your blog under the “writing” tags. I’m a stat checker as well, I think we all are at some level. Anyway, I wrote the post below when I first started my blog. Don’t worry, the title is misleading, it’s about obsessive stat checking. It’s cute and you’ll probably think its funny.

I’m stats obsessed too. I just had my biggest month with 5k views and I was super bouncy about it.

oh no….your comments went into spam…how can that be… I hope I didn’t accidentally delete any of your earlier comments cos I get loads of spam these days.

Wow congrats on the ‘bumper crop’ of readers….it’s really exciting 🙂 I love the affirmations from the blogging community.

I generally look for your reply, so I don’t think any other comments got eaten. But that made me go check my spam folder for real comments on my blog! Nothing but linky linky spam.

  6. I am crazy over stats too! And like you, I worry if my stats start to slide for a day. But so far, it has been increasing every week/month so I’m happy. =) Your total hits are awesome! I am waiting for the day when I reach 10,000. Haha
