Hey Gen Y: 3 Reasons why you may find me Primitive

1. Books: Enid Blyton, Laura Ingalls Wilder and Judy Blume defined my childhood – not Harry Potter (I haven’t read a single book and found the original movie a bit too young for me – ok boring). I wanted to go to an English Girls’ Boarding School (aka midnight feasts of Mallory Towers and St Clares) and not a School for Wizards.

2. Music: I softly declare that I don’t like Lady Gaga’s music even though I feel like a Gen Y mob will trample me in seconds.  I have yet to meet anyone from Gen Y who doesn’t like her music or costumes.  I was alive in the 70’s (& I loved it and yearn for music with melody, even – no especially, if sung by weird looking drugged out dudes with long hair. It was all about the music and lyrics. Lyrics that were pure poetry. Ballads that made your heart soar or brought tears to your eyes.)

3. Technology: I am just not that comfortable with technology the way my much younger cousins are – there is no fear when it comes to technology and they take to it like ducks to water.  For me it’s more like a belly flop and swallowing loads of chlorine before I learn to not drown.  I only just recently became familiar with Twitter having resisted for a long time.  And I quit Facebook as it made me too depressed.  I am not attached to an iphone (at least for now) and it frustrates me when everyone is surfing their phones during a meal.  I guess Gen Y got their first cell phones as kids (my cousin at 15) while I only got mine at the grand old age of 27.

But I truly admire Gen Y for their self -confidence and not being afraid of anything. I am the first to admit that I find them so much smarter as well.  Maybe better nutrition, being more tech saavy and those years of extra pre-school helped, although I wouldn’t trade my blissful childhood years before the trauma of school, for anything.

Spot on. Spot on. And spot on. Haha.

I’m Gen Y but I guess, I’m old fashioned. I don’t understand the whole Harry Potter thing as well. And yes!! Mallory Towers 🙂 Love Enid Blyton 🙂 And, no Lady Gaga for me as well. I find her music too vulgar. I’m all old schooler when it comes to music… I like Leslie Cheung and jazz. And, surfing net on phone while eating is terribly rude… though I got my first phone in Sec 3… 😛

I AM Gen Y and I was Enid Blyton, Laura Ingalls Wilder and some Judy Blume too. And heck, as a kid the person I really wanted to be was Jo from Little Women.

I don’t like Lady Gaga either. Some of her songs have grown on me, mostly Born This Way, and I like the cover of Poker Face that they did on Glee, but mostly she doesn’t particularly impress me although I cannot deny that the woman is a genius in the way she has marketed herself.

That’s cool! You’re like an old soul with your taste in books.

I found one of Lady Gaga’s songs sounding like a slightly modified duplication of Madonna’s. I liked Madonna’s music in the 80’s but don’t quite like her new persona or music.

I’m technically at the very tail end of Gen X.

Like you, I grew up on Laura Ingalls Wilder, Judy Blume, and others. My childhood was populated by The Babysitters Club and Sweet Valley High. Harry Potter was this “kids” book people kept pushing at me in college (and then I became a total convert…I love a good epic fantasy romp).

Music–I do like Gaga, both from a music and an art perspective. In general I like pop music. But I’m also into broadway, 50’s-70’s music, country, and randomness all over the place.

Tech–I was in college when the internet first became popularized, and I have easily adapted to the tech, and fully embrace it. But I compare my experience of record players, followed by walkmans, discmans and now iPods and phones that play my digital music library to Elanor’s experience and I know she’ll think I grew up in some deprived backwards time 🙂

I quite regret not hanging on to my old records and my dad’s old record player now. The sound was just magic or maybe it’s my nostalgia talking.

I am fascinated by how technology will continue to evolve but am still nostalgic over ‘old’ technology.
