Sri Mariamman Temple at South Bridge Road

I am not sure whether I have ever been inside this Hindu temple, but the carvings always intrigue me. Usually temple artists from India are commissioned to create the sculptures and they are always done by hand.

There were several tourists at the temple called the Sri Mariamman temple. Till I decided to blog about this, I had no idea it was the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore dating back to 1827, the time of Sir Stamford Raffles. The ornate structure you see today however was built in the 60’s.  Every year the main event is the fire walking ceremony held during October or November depending on the Hindu calendar.

Even as someone familiar with temples, I find the intricate artwork fascinating.  All those colours and faces. It was difficult to photograph as I did not know what to focus on.

Before you enter the temple you need to remove your slippers or shoes. Devotees will wash their feet before they enter the grounds. Can you see the hundreds of footwear here. No worries – it will still be there when you return. I also noticed the Singapore flag being hung, as Singapore’s National Day is around the corner.

A view of the temple from afar. The cow as the most sacred animal can be found in all hindu temples. Other revered animals include the elephant, snake and the peacock.

Ann Siang Hill and Chinatown are both just around the corner. This is definitely a touristy area that’s worth exploring.
