Modern Family’s Mistake? – Recasting Baby Lily

I thought the twins who played Baby Lily and who had a legion of fans were so adorable and irreplacable.

This is what is on their twitter page right now, as they have been replaced:

Retired at age 2 3/4. Played the adopted daughter to Mitch and Cam on Modern Family, ABC Seasons 1 & 2.

But apparently Hollywood is tough and the script fast forwards the character Baby Lily from 17 months to age 4 and cast a new girl who looks nothing like the twins (Jaden & Ella Hiller) who used to play her.

I love the values of the show but already find the script getting a bit too caricaturish and predictable. I still watched, because Jaden and Ella were so darn cute, and I think many others think so too, going by the response I got on my Baby Lily posts. It seems they wanted a more expressive child, but I thought the twins’ deadpan look was super cute (although that may have been due to the original twins’ fear of the camera and bright lights?). This is because off screen the twins look so chirpy and happy.

I never like it when characters on a TV show get replaced. I still recall I was upset about Sandy Duncan replacing Valerie on the show Valerie that Jason Bateman used to star when he was a teenager.

Perhaps the new Baby Lily will grow on the audience as most child actors do. She’s played by Korean American comedian, Amy Anderson’s daughter, Aubrey. To me she doesn’t resemble the original actresses at all. It’s obvious that it’s a totally different kid. And why couldn’t they get a Vietnamese child in the first place, as the kid is supposed to be adopted from Vietnam. Sorry, just me griping again, but I don’t like the feeling that perhaps they think all Asians look alike.

On a different but sort of related note, blogger Josie spotted our Singapore Airlines’ Sarong Kebaya on an episode of Modern Family. She has sharp eyes.

I recently started to watch Modern Family and I absolutely adore baby Lily’s deadpan looks. It gives her a certain character. I just started on Season 3 and the little girl that replaced the twins looks nothing like baby Lily. I’m still trying to get used to it.. will have to see how the season unfolds.

I wish they wouldn’t switch up on the audience like that thinking we wouldn’t notice. Guess the original baby lily won over many hearts…what a cutie huh? Maybe the 2nd baby lily will win over the audience after a while too.

i totally agree about lily’s new girl. she acts clearly too old for 4..and they jumped the timeline tooo fast there. my fiance and i missed the original lily twins a lot! this new girl isn’t really cute or maybe i just dont like the way she acts/directed to act.

I feel about the same way at the moment…..the audience has a hard time dealing with such a big jump and change…not believable as the other kids haven’t aged as much.

Maybe my feelings will change as time goes on.

Oh my gosh, I thought I was the only one that felt that way. I too loved the deadpan cuteness of the original Baby Lily. The new kid is cute, but she takes some getting used to, because I think she’s too intentionally cutesy. My mind changed a little with the last ep with the curse word.
