3 Singapore Hotels Linked to MRT Stations & Malls

Update 30 Sep 2011:
Since I’ve written this post, I have been getting great tips which leads me to suggest you check out Fairmont Singapore which is located above City Hall MRT. This is a good central MRT station as you don’t have to switch lines, like you would with the one at Bugis. Also it’s #9 on Tripadvisor. Check out the comments for more of the discussion and tips from other bloggers. Now I’m tempted to check it out myself one day.

What I wrote yesterday:
Being the non-independant scaredy cat sort, but on a budget, whenever I travel abroad my choice of hotel is always dependent on how close it is to the tube station. But the hotel still needs to be decent. So I decided to help out travellers to Singapore and list nice hotels that are linked to the various MRT stops.

This guide is for travellers like me who want to do minimal walking, so I’m only listing the nearest one. Also for spouses accompanying their significant other on business trips. A mall nearby might help if you’re not in the mood to venture out on your own. But just so you know, Singapore compared to most countries is pretty darn safe, even at night. Even I daresay for a solo female traveller.

The Red Line
1. Orchard MRT: Marriott Hotel (Mall: Tangs) Right smack in the middle of the Orchard Road Shopping Belt
2. City Hall: Swissotel The Stamford (Mall: City Link & Raffles City Shopping Centre)

The Green Line
3. Bugis MRT: Intercontinental Hotel (Mall: Bugis Junction) A worthwhile 10 minute stroll to get to Arab Street and Haji Lane

If you’ve never been to Singapore before and are dying in particular to experience Orchard Road, I would recommend the Marriott, but if you want to see more of our culture I would recommend Intercontinental Hotel. I think I’d prefer the Intercontinental as I’ve been to the Lounge and it has a wonderful relaxed vibe. Beautiful surroundings and with the piano tinkling in the background.

Managed to snap a photo recently of the Marriott which is just opposite ION, our snazziest new mall.

Ok let’s look at the Tripadvisor rankings now. Another thing I always do and I guess I would go with InterContinental.
InterContinental Hotel is #10
Swissotel: The Stamford is #26
Marriott Hotel is #36

In actual fact, once you’re next to the MRT, you can take it practically anywhere around the island. Just remember the lines in terms of colours. I find that easier as I’m quite a visual person. There’s always a guiding map at the station, but here is the Singapore MRT train map for reference.

I’ve never stayed in any of these hotels myself so I don’t know how good they are, but I might consider them for a staycation one day. I’ve had meals at all of them and they are pretty nice for fancy dinner out. Although if I had a staycation, I would be itching to try those not located near an MRT, like Marina Bay Sands or just any hotel which offers a great deal that’s easier on the pocket. But somehow if the cost is equivalent to a holiday in Bintan, I would prefer taking a ferry off the island. Somehow a holiday in your home country, doesn’t quite feel like a real holiday.

My favourite two are the Residence (across the cross road from Swissotel) and Fairmont (adjacent to Swissotel). Just adore them both for their service and pillows and views! One looks at the Esplanade and Flyer, and the other the Padang and the City Hall. Fairmont has a better breakfast buffet spread though…

Thanks so much for the recommendation AL. Will consider for my staycation and I am sure travellers appreciate your review 🙂 Yess..pillows are so important. Cannot be overlooked. I adore a good view as well and have spent many in night in hotels with views of another wall…. 🙁

I’ve stayed at the Hilton and the Conrad (which is the upscale Hilton brand hotel).

The Hilton is a standard Hilton, with smaller rooms (even for Asia) and could use a refresh. It’s a block and a half from the same MRT as the Marriott.

The Conrad was lovely. Fairly new rooms, great locale (across the street from Suntec City, next to Milennia Walk) and a block from the Esplanade stop of the circle line.

I have to second the Fairmont. Connected by mall to the Raffles MRT. The room was gorgeous, the service was great, and the breakfast buffet was so good we may just visit the hotel for that alone!

Looks like Fairmont is a winner…according to Tripadvisor as well it’s #9. Yeah I’m kinda obsessed with the Tripadvisor rankings and I love that it has all those real life photos taken by travelers as the official hotel ones can be misleading.

Raffles City is a great station to be at too cos you don’t have to switch lines so much. Thanks for the recommendation Crystal 🙂
