Read about Coffee Daily, a new independent coffee place, in our local TV guide, 8 Days. Decided then and there to make our way to Brighton Crescent at Serangoon Gardens. This spot used to be occupied by Awfully Chocolate as I recall buying a cake here once. It’s a bit out of the way, but I love quiet out of the way places in residential estates, but I wonder if people know this place exists if they didn’t read it on 8 Days like I did. Maybe it’s good it remains a secret, but I don’t think it will for long. But I do hope they do well and stick around for years to come.
I tempered my expectations, but when I entered I was immediately struck at how lovely the interior decor was. There was something very soothing about this place. Couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but pleasant vibes indeed.
I must say the owners have wonderful taste. There is a very home like feeling about the cafe and the way it’s structure feels nice, cosy and not so exposed. I don’t go to coffee places to be seen, but to disappear, so this works for me. I love the mismatched chairs, prints and unique lighting.
The most unique wall lighting that featured black pipes and bare light bulbs. Very cool indeed.
Pretty plates and eco friendly hand-made paper containers to hold the sugar.
The couple (according to 8 Days, they used to work in advertising), who own the place were very pleasant, welcoming and I love that they leave you be, apart from when you want something (especially good for introverts like me). I think it’s one of the nicer places to chat or read. And yes, the most important thing – the coffee is as good as what we’ve found at other boutique places like Oriole or Shots. The Piccolo Latte cost S$3.80 and the Cuppuccino S$4.50. And the best part – zero GST or service charge, and free parking.
I’m so spoilt by all the independent coffee places, that now I can’t imagine having coffee without coffee art or being too dilute with milk and ice cubes at the Chains. I mulled over a Nespresso Machine, but it’s expensive and part of drinking coffee is the whole experience and the vibe of the cafe. I now understand why students prefer to study at cafes rather than at home.
I am turning into such a coffee snob – only espresso based drinks for me please. And no fancy powders or flavours that to me, mar the taste. But of course, once in a while I still yearn for good old kopi.
There is a limited range of sandwiches and pastry here. The spinach and mushroom quiche was ok I guess, costing about S4.20. Their signature items are supposed to be the Carrot Cake and Smoked Duck Ciabatta which I hope to try next time. I saw crossaints and scones as well.
The shop is one among this row of old shophouses nestled within a quaint residential estate. The houses here are huge with long driveways. A peaceful and quiet setting.
I would definitely come here again because the service was good and I loved the soft music they played. Maybe it won’t be as nice if the place was as crowded as Loysel’s Toy on a Saturday. The quiet factor is a big draw and even the customers here seem more down to earth.

Cool, another new coffee joint to check out! 🙂
