Greenwich V: New Little Seletar Hills Mall with a Difference & My Pick of the Directory

I was impressed by the cosy design of malls like My Village and Rochester Mall, but now I am majorly impressed by Greenich V which is located within the Seletar Hills residential estate. It’s so charming and dare I say rustic? Why can’t all malls be just a little more unique like this one. I am really sick of all not only indentical but sterile looks. I would implore mall developers to hire this architect or planner whoever he or she is. I was loving all the wood, water and green. Coconuts trees everywhere added to the village feel that I figure they wished to recreate. I guess another factor was that the mall was very empty and I was loving all that space. Here are the guzillion pictures I took. Oh yes. It’s at 1 Seletar Road if you wanna check it out yourself. Even their website is much cuter than the others.

Even as we were approaching it, B commented that it didn’t really look like a mall (to me most malls in Singapore are multi-storied grey chunks of dull and it’s obvious the developer is maximizing every bit of space to our detriment).

I think they are building a condo behind this mall. The people who will be living here sure are lucky.

The parking here is a lot more generous than the one at My Village, but the lots are smaller.

I am loving the many restaurants on the second level. Ok, I’m greedy and lazy.  But I must say an independent bookstore would have been a nice addition.  When I was younger there seems to be a lot more bookstores (including second hand book stores) around.

I prefer Cold Storage to NTUC. B prefers NTUC.

A bubble tea store – used to be a fan of this Taiwanese tea during the last wave, but not any more. Especially after I heard about how Bubble tea is basically made of chemical pre-mix stuff (B the health conscious one, being the source of these warnings). I would definitely prefer my tea freshly made from tea leaves.

The statues by the fountain were so charming. Yes to art at malls.

Frozen Yoghurt – another food trend I’m not that crazy about. Just like my sour yoghurt with rice, Dhall and Curry. Or Lassi.

Seletar Kopi seems to be a food court of sorts which sells local food. I wanna try it out one day.

Walked to the front of the fountain with the sculptures for a closer look.

During Colonial times, in 1928, the Royal Airforce was located in Seletar. A lot of history in this area. It was the very first international airport that Singapore had.  The area also had a lot of country charm back then. I do recall driving past this area and it was very kampong and jungle like.  All that is sadly gone now as our population increased and land had to be taken from somewhere.  I can’t imagine what Singapore will be like 50 years from now. I don’t want to as I already feel claustrophobic thinking of the changes from the 70’s to now.

If it were up to me no mall would be higher than 3 stories. And this one has just two.

There’s a shop for Pet Lovers. Am thinking of Lady J, Miss Ene, Crystal, Kirsten, Yann and their sweet fur kids 🙂

Good – youngsters please don’t smoke. It’s terrible for the skin (I think that would appeal to you most)

I like the font they used. I really appreciate all the little features. Other mall developers should think about attention to detail.

I could practically pick coconuts from the second storey. Cool huh? Such a beachy feel.

Look at that view.

Another very thoughtful features. Pockets of grass with pretty trees. Yup. Absolutely loving all the green.

I do like Quiznos. Much tastier than Subway.

I’m posting the photos in walking order and as you can see, a pocket of green separates the little restaurant shacks. The structure reminds me of the Premium Outlets in Orlando Florida.

You could easily mistake this for a bench, and get soaking wet. But it’s a cool water feature.

The tots will love this splash fountain.

I like how perfectly round these trees are.

So many dining options, I had a hard time picking. It’ll take me months to try them all.

Empire Cafe seems pretty cute. We opted for Cedele which is huge and spacious and I’ll feature it in the next post since this one is so so long.

I do love the option of having french toast and pancakes any time of the day.

The soup looks good, but I have to try it to make sure. Photos always look enticing and what I’m served sometimes doesn’t match up.

A Japanese restaurant with what B thought was reasonable prices.

I wonder if the Thai food here is authentic.

Awfully chocolate is selling more than just chocolate at this outlet. I find their chocolate fudge a bit too gelatin like and perhaps their buns will be better?

I definitely want to come back. And I hardly ever say that about malls in Singapore. But one unfair thing is that the nicest malls are often not close to the MRT. I guess that’s why it’s not so crowded. But if they ever build a station here, it won’t be peaceful and so village like anymore. I also suspect it gets more crowded on the weekends, because these photos were taken on a weekday. (I just discovered that it’s supposed to be near Fernvale LRT which you need to take from Sengkang – I must try that one day)
