Miss Philippines, Venus Raj is Predicted to Win

Going by the online votes on the official website and betting odds, Venus Raj, aged 22, Miss Philippines, is predicted to be the winner of Miss Universe 2010. In some of the photos I think she has an Angelina Jolie vibe going. It would be cool if an Asian girl won for a change.  Also I found a bit of interesting information about her dethronement and rethronement on Wikipedia as there was some controversy about her out of wedlock birth being in Doha, Qatar.

Maria Venus Raj was born out of wedlock in DohaQatar but when her parents separated, she was taken to Bato, Camarines Sur in Bicol, Philippines as an infant and was registered by an aunt as Philippine-born to Catholic parents—a Filipino mother and an Indian father . It was her mother, a tenant farmer and dressmaker, who solely brought her up as a child.

Raj had lived in a nipa hut made of wood, bamboo and anahaw leaves with no electricity in the middle of a sprawling rice field in the rural Bato town for more than 20 years. She claims that walking on a rice paddy dike was her early training for walking on fashion runways where she developed her distinct prowess and exploits on the ramp.

And here’s a glamour shot of Tania Lim, aged 23, Miss Singapore. Much better than the earlier photo and I believe all the shots of contestants are retouched, so it’s best to just watch the show live to judge. Wouldn’t a Miss Universe Contest without any makeup be cool? Then they could discover a real natural beauty. Tania, actually looks a lot like our Singapore Airlines (SIA) girls and that’s a complement. SIA girls sometimes give us rude, abrupt and aloof service (although there are some very nice ones, whom I will mention when I come across them) but most of them look really polished and sophisticated.

At the moment I think Malika Menard, aged 23, of France is looking very good.

This is the current Miss Universe, Stefania Fernandez from Venezuela.  The previous year’s winner, Dayana Mendoza, is also from the same country. I think she’s really pretty.  It’s reported that she started training for the title since age 6.  Now that is pretty extreme. I have a nagging suspicion the online photos don’t do this years’ contestants justice. I think most of them will look much better on the day of the contest.  Somehow on TV all the contestants look radiant.
