Starbucks at Sembawang Shopping Centre

I like Starbucks not only for their iced latte but for the total experience. I find the decor very conducive for writing and reading. But some outlets are just better than others. The one at CityHall used to be a favourite, but why did they have to remove the air-conditioning. The one near Wheelok place was another favourite, but the new setting now is not as cosy. Sofas were replaced with wooden chairs. So my new favourites include the one at Sembawang Shopping Centre because it is not too crowded. Well at least last week it wasn’t. The crowded outlets include the one at ION Orchard and Big Splash. I really don’t care for the Big Splash outlet at East Coast as it gets so hot there with the sun beating strongly on the glass panelling. A green house effect we don’t need in hot Singapore. I like the outlet at Liang Court because I generally like the quiet, mall that seems like little Japan in Singapore. The one at Kallang Leisure Park has the best, most cheerful service.

Here are some shots I took at the Sembawang store which was decorated for Christmas. It was a rare occasion that I was served in a starbucks plastic cup rather than a disposable one. I think they were being green. Either that or they were conserving the special Christmas disposable ones with the snowflakes on them.

  1. Hey BJ!

I truly liked this post. It was well thought out. I tend to agree with you on a lot of points such as having endless friends on facebook who perhaps aren’t true friends but social network buddies. However you define it I have to disagree with you on a couple of points.

For one, my dad taught me that you can’t stop progress. You are absolutely right when you talk about writing and sending real letters. I remember them well! I have so many diaries that I leaf through that I feel I can learn from. I think we need to get our thoughts on the page.

At the same time, I think of how separate I felt from my family when my only option was the telephone or a letter. It took months at times. I am so thankful for the possibility to know in practically real time what people I love are up to.

About the microwave ~ I agree with you that they are strange. In fact, I never use one. But there is no one who tells you that you HAVE to use one. You have the choice. I’m drinking hot tea as I write this. It took me less than a minute to heat up on the gas fire stove.

As for the movies. Yes! A movie at a theater is a magical experience. I so agree with you, for example when you see beautiful actors up close. But at the same time, now that I have a family I LOVE to watch a DVD together. We stop when we want, we make popcorn, we are AT HOME! It’s another different kind of lovely experience. One doesn’t exclude the other.

About blogging ~ I can’t really comment because I think I’m still a newcomer to the blogging business, I just like writing. It’s cool to share too so that’s a plus.

Keep your chin up girl! Thanks for sharing the pictures of Starbucks! I was just saying how I wish there was one here. At least I can have a nice tall coffee virtually.

    Your friend,

    Julie

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Julie. You definitely do have a point about the benefits of progress as well 🙂 It’s true especially when we need to keep in touch with family that’s across the seas. I guess I was just in a nostalgic mood about the era before all the technological advances. Also after watching the Social Network, my distrust for Facebook kinda increased. And you’re right about the choice thing. It’s just that it can be so addictive.

The coffee in Italy must be amazing. The real authentic stuff 🙂 Is the atmosphere in Italian cafes conducive for writing and reading? Was just really curious about that. How does it differ from Starbucks? Would love to hear from someone close to the real stuff.

  2. i have to agree about the coziness of starbucks. of course, the coffee tastes good. i love sipping toffee nut frappuccino while writing. sometimes, when it is raining, i comfort myself with an extra hot mocha. if i’m not writing, i usually read at starbucks.

my partner teases me about converting my bedroom at home to look exactly like Starbucks – same colours etc. That somehow wouldn’t work. I would need to be surrounded by other people drinking coffee and reading. I think all that adds to the cosiness, besides the drink on hand.

Didn’t know they serve drinks in glasses? I don’t really like the paper cups and white mugs.
