Tiong Bahru Hawker Centre

The design of the Tiong Bahru Food centre is pretty unique, but your car will get cooked at the rooftop parking lot if you linger for too long. Eat and dash.

This time around I was not impressed by the food. Perhaps I didn’t know the right stalls to pick? Maybe my expectations were too high. Expected the food to be as good as what we get at Maxwell Road. It was not bad, like this old style bean curd. And the stall owners were all so friendly and polite. But it was not out of this world, considering the super long queue, but it was just 60 cents for a bowl.

I think I prefer the pao at Toa Payoh, although I thought Tiong Bahru pao was famous.

I was disappointed that there was no green bean ham chin pang. I always prefer green bean or yellow bean as I call it, which I can get at the Parkway Parade food court. But the lady at this stall was so cheerful in contrast to the rude service I got the last time I tried to buy a snack at Parkway. Sadly when it comes to food, most Singaporeans will put up with some rudeness. Maybe that’s why bad service, continues to be bad.

The pao served at this particular stall was handmade and served warm (nice lady in the white T shirt) which was a big plus.  The ones at Parkway Parade or the Food Republic at VivoCity is often served cold. It’s just a sign of laziness, as they would rather fry all at one go and let them go cold, rather than serve the items fresh and hot which is a key in food service.

The hawker centre was very crowded but it’s huge so we could still find a seat quite easily. I liked the spaciousness of the design.
