Bismillah: Not My Kind of Biryani

I expected to be wowed. They claim to be Singapore’s best dum biryani. Instead I was sorely disappointed and felt I had wasted my calories. Irritating when that happens because we do enjoy meal time so much. Should have gone for French food as B had suggested but I was craving for Indian and after all the rave reviews I read I thought I must try what had been touted to be the best Biryani in Singapore. And this place has been visited by Anthony Bourdain as well on his new show The Layover. We were both still puzzled when the rice came out, obviously microwaved. It was scorching hot and I almost burnt my upper palate. The mutton was tough was I guess all right. Perhaps I am used to the tastier unhealthier Singapore style briyani which uses lovely ghee and has lots of gravy and dhal, but the difference was vast. I’m sticking to my favourite place for briyani – Yakader. I guess taste is subjective but B wanted me to add that he usually finishes his food even if it doesn’t please him but this time he just could not. I think the microwave aspect turned him off the most. And I’ve had biryani in India and it was much better than this – but I have to admit oilier too. The sweet lassi I had here was too dilute as well. They portion of rice was a lot though. The price is much higher than Yakader at S$11.

Would love to hear your thoughts about this place. What I did like was the decor. Very old school and the bright red paint was attractive. They were playing old Hindi music videos too. But we were both tickled by the huge self promotion signs. I really wonder what happened to the place. Has the cook changed?

And this visit reinforced to me the reason why I just can’t do invited posts. Some of the rave reviews I read I suspect were invited by the owner and perhaps the biryani was prepare differently for them? That or I just don’t like the idea of a healthy biryani. I have to add that the Singaporean female owner (going by her accent) was very polite so that was a plus. I’m not sure if she is the new owner, but I think she might be? Super skinny female patrons tucking into the rice should have been a warning signal to me.
