After my dreary post on New Year’s eve, I went over to my aunt’s place for our annual family New Year’s eve party and had a blast! We talked about strange things like the Mayan prediction that the world is going to end in 2012 and we unanimously and instantly agreed it would be great, because then we get to go together. We also joked about all the things we could do and how we’d really live it up if we knew for sure the world was going to end in two years. Only my lone cousin P was being naughty and said that we could all transfer the money in our bank accounts to him and he will make sure it’s well spent. He thinks the end of the world theory is hogwash.
P did a mean BBQ and we enjoyed the lamb, chicken and prawns (my blurry photos taken in the very dim light don’t do the food justice at all). Felt a bit sorry for him because we were all sitting around chatting as he slaved over the hot smoky BBQ pit. My aunt made her amazing garlic bread, cousin C baked her lovely lemon meringue pie and my mum made her agar agar (Asian rose hard jelly).
We played Pictionary and were truly rolling on the floor laughing till our sides split at all our uncles’ funny drawings. Just a few minutes before midnight, we turned on the TV to the local channel 5, just for the count down (because otherwise we cringe at local TV variety shows). Then it was popping of the confetti cracker thingys and the bubbly and lots of hugging.
This morning I have a sore throat from all the laughing, a hangover from the champagne and sangria, but I still am grinning with happiness on the inside. Love coming together with the whole family and just missed my little cousin D who is not in Singapore. We were all thinking of her. She makes the best cocktails and I love how she’s heavy handed with the liquor.
A little golden yellow butterfly landed on our grapes and just sat there for some time. Maybe it was my late cousin A whom we all adore, come to pay us a little visit in spirit. Who knows how life works. Deep down I don’t believe that time is linear and I think there are more than 6 dimensions. We truly achingly missed him, especially on this day. I am also grateful and feel that I hit the jackpot when it comes to family. I have the most caring uncles, aunts and cousins anyone could hope for and I love them so much.
