Our Hari Raya Party

Today was a public holiday in Singapore as we celebrate Hari Raya. It’s the end of the fasting month or Ramadan, for our Muslim friends in Singapore.

My Aunty C threw a Hari Raya Party, and she prepared chicken briyani with sambar (dhall curry). I must admit, I had no shame and went for seconds and thirds.

There was also plain briyani rice for the vegetarians in our family and those who can’t take spicy food.

For dessert she made rose agar agar and the healthy portion of the meal included a fruit platter.

Aunty D made irresistable pink coconut candy.

Cousin C chipped in too, with chocolate mousse. I usually don’t like mousse, but her version was so different in a good way. She told us she didn’t add any gelatin, and I found it more chocolatey than foamy.

I think she also made the mango and pomelo with sago dessert.

Aunty C also made us margaritas.

For entertainment we talked or more like joked over politics and played bingo. It was another super fun family gathering and we’re looking forward to the next one. I love when we spend quality time in a big group and there’s lots of laughter and good food.

Ooo I love reading about your family gatherings, it must be so fun! It’s something I don’t get to enjoy very much on my side.

I am sad that we are estranged from some members and don’t see them as much (miss them), and also deeply miss those we have lost, but moments with family is just pure fun sometimes. It’s the people whom I can really be totally childish with and they won’t judge.

I understand though that it’s not always picture perfect and family dynamics can be tough.
